Greener Grass

Background:

Comparison is all around us, and it has always been a thing. This is evident in the saying that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Scripture:

Genesis 4:3-8 talks about Cain killing Abel due to anger/downcast when his offering did not please God.
Luke 22:24 where the disciples argue who among them is the greatest

2 things which comparison is affecting our lives:

1. Comparison feeds self-centeredness

Self centeredness means that everything revolve around me..it asks the question why can't I be like everyone else, or even the reverse,  why can't everyone else be like me? When we are kids, we would want to be "first". Even John does this, esp when he used the word "first" in his book , e.g. the first in the tomb. Even Peter says that unlike everyone else, he will not betray Jesus (which he did 3 times). This needs to stop as it tears others down.

2. Comparison starves contentment

We feel insufficient or inadequate when we compare ourselves with our colleagues,  our friends esp. the one who better. Craig Groeschel write that "the fastest way to kill something special is to compare it with something else" and also  "When comparison begins, contentment ends".

In the 10 Commandments, God says not to covet. The word covet means to yearn for something - to look at something and say "I want that". Some may say that if there is no comparison we become complacent but in reality there's is a difference between comparison and aspiration. We can aspire but still be content.

If you compare and want to be another, you will deprive the world of who you are and who you will be.

1. Comparison feeds self-centeredness. Humble yourselves before God

2. Comparison starves contentment. Find your confidence in God

The grass may look greener on the other side but the truth is that it is always green when there is water.  Are you giving our all to make sure it is green?
