Scripture:1 Samuel 16-23
The sermon explores the relationship between King Saul, David and Jonathan, the eldest son of King Saul. In the scripture passage, the author of the book wrote about how David was asked to be the servant in the court if King Saul. When his son Jonathan saw David, they developed a friendship so strong that the Crown Prince Jonathan chose to give up the throne for David.
What are the differences between True and Toxic relationships?
1. True friendship lift you up but toxic friendship put you down
David knew that Saul was after him because David was gaining favor from his people, and will be making David their King. True friendship means putting down whatever they are doing to help lift you up when one is down. Jonathan came to David and told his fried that David will be king and Jonathan the second, and the 2 made a covenant.
Hebrews 10:24-25 ...not giving up meeting one another...encourage each other
2. True friendship protect you from harm but toxic friendship destroys your life
There was a dispute between Jonathan and David, when David told Jonathan that King Saul is about to kill him. There is a trend that "we listen but we don't judge". Do not be afraid of rejection - love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. Toxic people are unhappy when you do well.
3. True friendship bring out the best in you but toxic friendship make use for you.
King Saul gave his daughter to David so that David will serve him against the Philistines, hoping that the Philistines will kill David. After David killed Goliath, Jonathan gave David his robe, tunic, sword...a symbol of transfer of the throne.
If we have a King Saul in our lives, what do we do? We confront, and if this is not successful, then we distant ourselves but still honor the person.
