Worry Trap

Sermon by Pastor Melissa Quah @ FCBC Mar 2025: watch it here

Background

Comparison steals our contentment but worries steals ur peace. We worry about the big things and the small things but in many cases, there is not a lot we can do about it.

Scripture

Matthew 6: 25-34 from Jesus's sermon on the mount. Jesus talks about how we should not worry about what we eat or what we wear. But seek first the kingdom of God. In the passage, Jesus mentioned do not worry 3 times.

Worry is a choice of free will. To not worry, there are 2 resolutions we need to do:

1. Let go of what is beyond our control
We cannot control over people's thoughts our death, price of food, economy, etc. Being concerned and being worried are 2 different things.  A concern is when you have the ability to do something and we do something about it.  To worry is when we do not have the ability to change but still be anxious about it.

Charlie Brown says that worry does not stop the bad from happening but it stops us from enjoying the good.

2. Let God hold our tomorrows

Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself.  One example is during the Exodus where God supplies the manna daily - if the Israelites keep it for the next day, the manna will have maggots the next day. Corrie Ten Boom says that worrying does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow but empties today of its strength.

God's word says that if he cares so wonderfully about the wildflowers,  he will certainly care for you. Cast all your cares on him, for he cares for you

Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand.  But I know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds my hand - Ira Stanphil
