Making an Impact

Sermon by Ps Eugene Tan at the Faith Community Baptist Church @ 31 Jan 2026.

Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16 talks about believers to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that we can shine so that people can praise God.

Being the salt and light is to bring transformation to the world. When we think of people who can make an impact, we think these consist of mostly politicians, superstars, athletes but not me.

But who is Jesus referring to when he calls them to be the salt and light?

Note: the apostles were ordinary and common people - they have weaknesses, failures just like all of us. The good news is that we are not to do this alone - Jesus is addressing not a single person but a mandate to all. Every disciple is called to bring influence and make an impact.

Salt can influence and change the status. When there is light, it reveals good and expose evil and what is wrong.

God calls us to make an impact by doing these...

1. So that Others can see God

We are become the salt and light not in church but in the world. It is not one that withdraws from the world, but in the world, not of the world but influencing the world...at home, workplace, school, neighbourhoods.

Unsalted meat cannot help from going bad because that is its tendency. Question is: where is the salt? Where is the Christian when we need one?

If the candle is under the bowl, it can only be effective under the bowl, limited. If we only live as Christians in the church, we still have influence but we are called to be the light of the world. When light comes, darkness will disappear. The world does not read the Bible but they read Christians - we are the light of the world.  If we allow sin to enter and take root, we lose our effectiveness as salt and become useless light.

2. So that others will receive Christ

We are asked to shine the spotlight on Jesus so that Jesus will be praised. The church exist but to draw men to Christ. Step into the darkness, shine your light and watch God turn the smallest candle into a beacon.

Your life is the loudest sermon you will ever preach.
