The struggle of Prayer

Background:

Many are OK in reading the Bible and worshipping God. We are also OK in listening to sermons and showing up for church. The difficulty is in prayer, where we could only do seconds or minutes, but nothing more.

Scripture: Exodus 17:10-11

The story is about Moses overcoming the Amalekites. Moses was holding the staff while Joshua and the Israelites were in battle. When Moses's hand was up, Israel was winning, but when the hand is down, Israel will lose. When Moses cannot lift his hand any more, they were propped up by Aaron and Hur. Moses's hand was lifted all the way until victory was achieved.

The struggle is real.

Why must we struggle in prayer even when it is difficult to do so?
Because there is...

1. Battle in the spiritual realm

The spiritual realm exist , and the devil exists as well. Know that the devil is out there as a prowling lion looking for someone to devour. Thus, our struggle is not against flesh or blood but against spiritualities in heavenly places.

Daniel was also praying but there was no answer. When the angel showed up after 21 days, he told Daniel that he was dispatched but was stopped by the prince of Persia. It was only after 21 days that he appeared to Daniel. But the angel will leave to fight again after delivering the message.

We must continue to pray because the battle continues. Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saints on their knees.

2. Conquering of the flesh

It is understandable to be tired because our flesh is weak. In many commentaries, the scholars pointed out that only Moses's hands are tired but the soldiers are not. Same as real life - it is easy to serve, to worship, to read. The more spiritual the service is, the more difficult it is to overcome the flesh.

How did Moses overcome? It is by leaning on the others - Aaron and Hur supported Moses. It is through teamwork that we can continue with prayer.

In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked his disciples to watch and pray, lest they fall into temptation.  Are we watching, praying? If we do not continue in prayer, we will lose. Let's not make the mistake of doing and not praying beforehand.

Prayer is the same as building muscles. The longer we perservere, the better we are at it.

3. Discipline to ensure victory

Prayer is so important and if we are disciplined in doing so, we will see results.

The victory over the Amalekites is no small task. The Amalekites were a trained and prepared army whereas the Israelite were refugees who have just left Egypt. But Moses kept his hands up until sunset while Daniel waited 21 days.

We pray and give up way too easily. Jesus himself taught that we should always pray and not give up via the parable of the unjust judge. Even if the judge is unjust, he will take action because of the widow was persistent with her prayers.

All prayers are answered: yes, no, or wait. We just don't like the last 2 answers.

If we have not seen results, have we prayed enough like Moses or the persistent widow? Persevere and we will see the results.

Time Management or is it really Project Management?

We have been told since young by others that in order to do something well, we need to have good time management.  As one who leads projects for a living who knows a thing or two about this, I will say that time management is a fallacy.  Purely speaking, time management  (just like managing people) refers to managing time in which we control time, i.e. we can accelerate it (to make it go faster), slow it down, or to stop time. We can do this with a lot of things but we cannot manage time - it continues to chug along, whether we like it or not. If you were to ask me the time and my answer is, say 9:00am, that time is already gone because it is 9:01am when you continue with what you are doing.  Time is like a freight train or a subway that we can only latch on to and hope we can do things within the allotted time. Ask the student who needs to submit the paper at 11:59pm Sunday night or the employee who need to submit the report Mon morning 9:00am.  In truth, what ...

The Mental You - Reducing Stress part 2

Just like there are always 2 sides to each story (the good and the bad), we can tackle issues in 2 ways - either head on or perhaps we can do something opposite altogether. The previous post is primarily concerned on how to overcome stress by reducing it. Another way is to focus on something totally unrelated to stress. So, rather than looking at fixing the bad, we focus on the good such that there is little room for the bad.  Let's work on this together... Positive Thinking  What do you see if you turn on the news, or start looking at social media? More often than not, aside from the beautiful people and cute cats, the news is mostly gloom and doom. There are wars and rumors of wars, climate change due to global warming causing floods, and other disasters, earthquakes at various parts of the world. So, it's no uncommon for us to no longer see the world in rose-tinted glasses but glasses with murky lenses. And yet, to reduce stress, this is the one thing we must do - to think ...

Why this Blog?

Err...what? You are starting a blog in your 50s?  Well, not exactly. When I first started a so-called blog, it was 2001 in the free Geocities site (this later became oocities). This went on for some time and there is a long hiatus after 2006 as work and parenting duties (2 kids) started to take its toll. For those interested how an old blog looks like, here is the site (perhaps we can check again 10-20 years from today to confirm if this last for ever):  A Malaysian in Singapore So yes, i started again in my 50s to provide advice to those coming after me so that they can learn and perhaps do something better than what I have done...hence the title "Paving the Wei", i.e. to make it easier for something to happen or for someone to do something.  Thanks again for visiting and I hope that you get as much from the blog as I have in writing it...  Our definition of success is never about how well we do for ourselves in this generation, but how well we enable the next gener...
