Sermon by Pastor at the Faith Community Baptist Church 1 Aug 2026.
Background:
Advances in techonology has caused a culture shift, in the way we do many things. Some of these are like movies, performances, and other activities. There is also a question on spiritual things, esp church and meeting together as a congregation.
Scripture: Hebrews 10: 19-25 talks about the importance of drawings near to God, to spur each other on to love and good deeds, and to meet together.
Assemble = to bring people together as a group, or to fit together to form a single object. We are called out from the world by God, and assemble to form the body of Christ.
Why is it important for people to assemble?
1. It demonstrates our commitment to one another
The writer of Hebrews use the words "brother and sister", and "let us" several time to show that we do things together. Jesus tells us to love God but the next thing is to love your neighbour...which is all about the community. As time move on, life becomes more solitary...we want to do our own things. God instead wants us to do the opposite.
2. It demonstrates our commitment to God
Yes, we can read the Word of God anywhere, we can worship anywhere, we can pray anywhere. But if we want to commit to God, we must commit to one another. When we meet in church, there is corporate unity as we encourage one another.
It is possible to be committed to church but be uncommitted to God. But it is impossible to be committed to God, and yet wilfully uncommited to his church. If we can gather to watch the World Cup or concerts, let us with the same spirit go to church.
