Sermon by Pastor Daniel Khong at the Faith Community Baptist Church on 15 Aug 2026.
In celebrations, we often reminisce, recall and remember the past things, the good and bad experiences and how we went thru it.
Scripture: Psalms 78 talks about remembering what God has done so that we would put our trust in God, we would not forget and keep his commands.
We all know we would forget, but we will often say "I will not forget" that we would take notes nor write it down. Deut 6:12 warns us to beware, lest we forget the Lord who brought us out of the land of Egypt. Dietrich Bonhoerffer wrote that Satan does not here fill us with hatred of God, but fogetfullness of God.
What must we do to avoid forgetting God's works in our lives?
1. Recall God's works
To recall is to delibrately and actively think of past things. In Psalms 78, Asaph wrote how about the good things God did such as providing food and water, have manna and birds. While Asaph did not experience these first hand, he made it a point to recall the things God had done.
After Moses, came the Joshua generation. Similar to what Moses did at the Red Sea, Joshua and the Israelites crossed over the Jordan. They then set up a covenant to show the people what God did so that it will a memorial.
2. Recount God's works
The describe how something happened and tell it to someone else. Asaph wrote that he will utter things of old, things they have heard and known, and will tell the next generation of the.praiseworthy deeds of God, his power and wonders.
After the Joshua generation, came the generation of the Judges, where the people forgot about God and chose to worship other gods.
It is because we did not put enough effort to recall/recount the goodness of God.
3. Renew our minds
Recalling and recounting is good but this may make us stuck in the past. The ultimate goal of recallimg and recounting is to put their trust in God, that we be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
We often use terms such as "good ol' days", or "back in my time", people will not listen to you anymore. This is the same as the Israelites who wanted to go back to Egypt after crossing the Red Sea.
How can we renew our minds if we are stuck in the past? Because we cannot go back, we must learn to not dwell in the past, to renew our minds and move towards the future.
We need to recall and recount of the past good things and be excited of the good things in the future.
